lala meet lala imageLala - n. a musical melody, sweet to the ear, pure to the soul. no imitations. no limitations. just a note to hold. a song is a circle that can’t be broken. a sign of affection that can’t be token. the beauty of a word that can only be spoken. this…sista…. is…smoking. strong, black, thick, music is her stick .smile of the Nile, hips by the mile. sight by the Son. army of one. words are her wealth. much love for self. lala – a song, a circle that can’t be broken. a sign of affection that can’t be token. the beauty of a word that can only be spoken. this…sista…is…smoking.

Born and raised in the Washington DC Metro area, Lala is a solo vocalist and spoken word artist. True to her name, her vocals seems to always find their way into her poetry.

“I know this is a poetry venue, but y’all, I can’t help but sang a lil’…”

Publishing her first book in August 2001, “When Paper Met Pen”, she rhymed her way into cafes, schools, bookstores, and hearts across the country. This author, writer, performer, and vocalist feels at peace on the stage, even blessing the mic barefoot as one does at home after a long day’s work. To promote the art of words, she developed and maintains her online company, www.Lalalounge.net, where she features her own creations, promotes her book and events, and where artist and poets can submit their work for spotlight.

Oddly enough, you won’t see Lala at a venue every nite like some other cats who love to rhyme.

“Though spoken word is my heart, I know it can’t take priority. Other things like family, school, and most importantly serving Jehovah must come first – and that’s a 24-7 job.”

However, she does make it her aim to grace the scene every so often to keep the skills sharp and support other artist. Favorite spots include Java Head Cafe, Bohemian Caverns, Gallery 409, and Takoma Station Tavern where she just claimed the Black Words 2002 Grand SLAMMIN Champion title. Lala has been featured at many venues up and down the East Coast, as well as rocked radio spots and lyrical forums in the DC area. In addition to that, she has performed for high school and college audiences, as well as corporate events and functions. Currently she is simultaneously working on her sophomore book and premiere CD. She looks forward to building with different artists on upcoming projects, and is always seeking ways to keep the art alive.

“I like the scene right now. It’s constantly flowing, constantly growing. It’s like a melody, and no matter if I jump in on the up-beat, or the down-beat, I know it’s a live beat and I love to dance…”
